    Sunshine

    Rating: ★★★★☆
Remember that trailer that you saw that one time? You know, the one in front of that movie… you can’t really remember what it was, but there was a Sun in it, and a ship, definitely a ship. Yeah! That one! Well that movie is called Sunshine and its a movie by Danny Boyle (Trainspotting, 28 Days Later) and it’s got Cillian Murphy (28 Days Later), Michelle Yeoh (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon), Hiroyuki Sanada (Ringu) and Chris Evans (Fantastic Four) in it. When I was out looking for a Blu-Ray disk to buy so I could flex my Playstation 3 muscles we came up with this one. I mean, c’mon, it’s Danny Boyle how come I didn’t see it in the movies? How come no one saw it in the movies?

The premise of the movie is summed up pretty succinctly in the opening speech of the movie. Basically the Sun is dying, and life as we know it will go out with it unless something is done. A Solar Bomb was made to create a star within the star, and sent out 7 years prior. The mission was declared MIA. Now Icarus 2, the second attempt at trying to replenish the sun is embarking on their mission. The crew is comprised of eight members, all different scientific experts. And, Go! I really like the premise & story of this movie, it had the same vibe for me as a lot of Ray Bradbury short stories.

Visually this movie was stunning. The set design & costume design was brilliant. I was seriously blown away by some of the scenes. As soon as I saw the initial shots of the spaceship that they were taking on this mission I knew I had made an excellent choice for wanting to see a visually impressive movie.

I was actually really impressed by Chris Evans’ performance in this movie. I liked him a lot in the two Fantastic Four movies but was worried that he might get typecast as the same sort of alpha-male goon in every movie he was in. Of course Cillian Murphy was amazing as always. Then interaction & chemistry between the crew was palpable & believable. There was a good tone set throughout the whole movie that I felt kept you very engaged. It was one of those movies was futuristic but kept that sense of reality to it that keeps you thinking “This could actually happen” which always adds a cool feeling to a movie watching experience.

Unfortunately this movie did not do very well in the Box Office at all, which is a shame. When something like that happens it makes me sad. Because original story Science Fiction adventures like this one are great. But if they keep bombing at the box office they’ll just keep making “Disaster Movie”, “Epic Movie”, “This is a disgrace to Leslie Neilson’s Legacy Movie” and other terrible horrible pieces of crap that the public just eats up. If you are a science fiction fan, and/or a Blu-Ray snob then you definitely need to check this movie out.
